Trailer : The Iron Lady

Here’s a first look at Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in Phyllida Lloyd’s The Iron Lady. Written by Abi Morgan (The Hour, Brick Lane) and also starring Jim Broadbent, Roger Allam and Richard E. Grant, the trailer doesn’t give away much more than a first look at Streep in character, an initially startling sight…

There was probably little doubt that Streep would nail the accent and physical attributes of Thatcher from the get-go, but let’s just hope that they’re merely superficial aspects of a deeper performance, one that doesn’t simply rely on window-dressing to embody its character. Saying that, a certain proboscitory window-dressing won Nicole Kidman an Oscar for The Hours in 2003, but a similar stab at external verisimiltude remained a constant distraction throughout Streep’s last portrayal of a non-fictitious figure, as Julia Child in Julie & Julia (2009).

Guess we’ll find out when The Iron Lady hits UK cinemas on January 6th 2012.
